Gemstone guide

Emerald, sapphire, spinel: origin, treatment, and what to ask before you choose.

I

Origin

Where a stone was found changes its colour, not its worth.

Colombian emeralds lean blue-green, Zambian ones lean deeper and cooler. Ceylon sapphires are brighter than Kashmir ones and far easier to find. We name the origin on every certificate, and we choose the stone for its colour first.

Treatment

Most coloured stones are treated. Honesty is in saying how.

Heating a sapphire is ancient and stable. Oiling an emerald is common and needs care over the years. Filling or diffusion we do not buy. Every treatment is written on the certificate that travels with the piece.

III

Hardness

How a stone will wear over a lifetime.

Sapphire and ruby sit just below diamond and suit a ring worn every day. Emerald is softer and more brittle, so we set it in protective settings and advise against wearing it for heavy work.
